The Meaning of National Summer Camp Experiences for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Abstract
A qualitative study was shared in the national summer camp program volunteers¡¯ camp experiences and views about critical factors to success. The camp program provided by a nationally recognized camp program for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder in the Midwest U.S.A. The case study approach was implemented through focused face-to-face interview. The participants of the interview segment were camp service volunteers; the camp advocate, coach, nurse and councilor. Most participants agreed that the camp experiences were beneficial for individuals with ASD, but some of the problems were pointed out. In addition, the study found primary factors contributing to the success of the camp: human and material resources including consideration of individuals with ASD¡¯s physical and sensory, social interaction, and family needs.
